United were well and truly dismantled on Sunday, as City came through convincing winners in the derby, cruising to a 3-0 win thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland and an early header from Phil Foden. Most painful wasn't just the score, but the manner in which City were able to gain this lead. City didn't have to be overly convincing to win this game, while United seemed lost, making mistakes that they simply cant afford to.
The performance will only raise further doubts over Amorim's system. The team selection still can be quite puzzling at times. His decision to keep Bruno as one of the 8's in the midfield proved costly for the opener as he lost Foden very easily when he had clear sight of him. Bruno didn't manage a single touch in the opposition box and wasn't able to have a real effect on the game. Shaw had a poor game, and his lack of physicality and presence in the backline was highlighted as Doku and Haaland skipped past for two of the City goals.
Another player who struggled to make a mark on the game was Benjamin Sesko. In the same weekend Gyokeres netted for Arsenal, and Woltemede got his debut goal for Newcastle, Sesko managed 0 touches in the opposition box. I'm not sure any striker would be able to conjure up much more in his position, with little service in to him in the form of crosses. Sesko was found once by Mazaroui after making a clever run between the City centre back and full back, and forced a save by Donnaruma before being deemed to have handled the ball. Apart from this and a shot from outside the box on his weaker foot, there wasn't much more to cheer about and his quiet display underlined just how big the adjustment will be, and how United and Amorim will have to do more to get the most out of him.
There is a growing theme being seen in matches that United are weak when the opposition really puts pressure on. City didn't play particularly well, and United looked decent at times in particular at the start of both halves, but United at the moment are struggling to score goals and struggling to dig deep and keep the opposition out. The game finished 3-0, whereas it could've been 5 or 6 with Haaland and Reinjders both missing good chances. At the same time, United had chances to get back in the game but just lack that confidence and ruthlessness in front of goal.
Mbuemo was again United's bright spark and forced a great save from the City goalkeeper. United supporters are hoping that the his performances don't drop, in line with those around him. Dorgu was a threat going forward and was strong in his 1v1 duels, but at 20 years old, there's perhaps too much pressure on the young full back to deliver. He managed the most touches in the City box (12) and took up some very dangerous positions but his end product is still very raw and will need to be worked on.
Interestingly, Ugarte was chosen in the midfield alongside Bruno. Amorim said this was for the extra mobility he offers as opposed to Casemiro. The Uruguayan had an ok first half and tackled well, but was caught in possession quite a few times in the second half and gave Shaw a shaky pass before losing possession, leading to Haaland's second.
In a dull afternoon for United, Kobbie Mainoo was one of the few bright sparks, showing his composure under pressure. He carried the ball very well and drove towards City's backline, beating the press with a nutmeg on one occasion. Performances like this make it all the more frustrating for fans that he remains on the fringes, especially when the pivot with Bruno in here is clearly not working. Mainoo has shown how well he can play against City in recent seasons. I would be very suprised if we don't see a pivot of Mainoo and Casemiro against Chelsea, with Bruno pushing forward. It will be interesting to see what Ruben does with Mount if he is back available, but its obvious that things cannot carry in as they are.
It's understood that Amorim still has the backing of the club and won't be removed from his position after this result. With Chelsea, Brentford and Sunderland on the horizon, United fans need something to cheer. Ruben will need a result in two of these games to silence speculation over his future. But with the physicality of the three teams that they will face, something about the starting team will have to change.
